condition. on this first day of 2010, when it comes to crime, the city of baltimore managed to into 2009 with a homicide total. as the new year begins, there is a unique question about public safety. jayne miller has more. >> that question concerns leadership. at the inner harbor last night, the city police commissioner braved the cold rain to deliver a new year's greeting to his rank-and-file. he publicly praised the results. >> these men and women did one hell of a job. >> he was referring to the most prominent bolometer, which is homicide numbers. the fatal shooting of a man on wednesday was the final murder of the year.

just 237. >> we have posted over the last two years, the lowest in nine fatal shootings in years. it is incredible we have demonstrated that we could sustain the violent crime reduction that was historic in 2008. >> the question is now what is in the future. her sentencing date is in three weeks. publicly, they are looking far beyond that. but how we prioritize who we are after in terms of violent offenders, and moving that out of the process and the command level process and i think that is where we wall take baltimore

and public safety to a whole new level. >> if hixon is forced out of office, someone else will take over. a spokes person said that the two have a good working relationship. >> annapolis police had few details about this morning's deadly hit and run accident. they have yet to identify the victim, the driver or the suspect vehicle. the suspect was driving east on bay ridge road and hit a pedestrian and according to police, kept on going. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. there was no indication that the driver was speeding and the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and in the roadway.

police also have an assault investigation on their hands today, just minutes after midnight, officers responded to disorderly conduct call. when they got there, they found two men who were injured. we're live at police headquarters. >> hundreds of people gathered at this new hotel to help celebrate the beginning of 2010. that celebration almost ended the life of two -- two people. >> this incident is an unusual incident. >> 2010 ushered in a potential deadly incident. it was just after midnight on new year's eve when they were called to a hotel. >> it was about 12:00 03 a.m.. as officers were responding, the call was upgraded to a possible

shots fired call. the fire department was called just minutes earlier to handle overcrowding and the call turned them into potential witnesses. >> the fire department was on the scene when the shots happened. >> when police arrived, they found two male victim's. both were taken to the hospital in critical condition. >> we do have some video we are going to review. we do not know what precipitated this. we do not know if it was something celebratory or if it was some type of clash in the crowd. >> of the only description that police have of a suspect is a male in blue jeans and a jacket. >> if you have information, you

were asked to call police. >> a former instructor will face a judgment on sex abuse charges. the 38-year-old has been charged with sexually abusing a 15 year- old female student. he turned himself into police on wednesday the abuse allegedly happened in october during a fund raiser. >> it was a pretty quiet day today. there were a lot of clouds, but there were some breaks in the clouds. some of these clouds are producing a couple of stories. -- of flurries. it amounts to a weather disturbance that is trying to move through.

this could be moving into cecil county and crossing the bay. again, with the dry air, this will not be more than a flurry or two. we will have this kind of weather over the next few days. details on all that is coming up in just a minute. >> now, more fallout on the attempted bombing of a northwest airlines flight on christmas day. jennifer johnson has the story. >> tensions remain high as another northwest airlines flight headed to detroit was forced to land in tennessee because of a suspicious package. it turned out to be a christmas ornament. the pilot was taking no chances.

in a message to employees, the ceo says that you will be certain that they will make their voices known in washington. >> if you look at the failures on 9/11, they are exactly the same as the failures this christmas. president obama has summoned general public, and others to a meeting on tuesday to review the intelligence break down. the white house is also getting heat from passenger pilots for not warning all pilots of the attempted attack. >> we have to confirm ignition of an explosive device on an aircraft and there were 3500 flights airborne over the united states at the time and who can guarantee that there was not another even about to happen on one of those flights. >> the u.s. is now trying to convince european nations to use more full body scanners.

you can see this just beginning to move on the bay. some of this may be evaporating before it hits the ground, but i think that a few folks may experience a few flurries. a lot of the lake affects snow is coming out of that. it is all out there. it is all winter time. >> as i mentioned, today is the warmest day we will see for a while. these were all midnight or 2 in the morning. while temperatures are in the '40's, we were getting some light rain between midnight and three yen. there is still 307 inch at the airport.

here are the temperatures right now. taiex bill is 35. martin state airport is 41. there is the same reading across the bay. there is a wider view of the temperatures. they're beginning to filter into the area and the mild stuff is being pushed to the south as the storm breaks up. look at chicago. it is only 14. it is well below in fargo, north dakota. they aren't even getting chilly. the satellite picture is looking spotty. those like effect snows have a combination of the services coming our way, but primarily it is this northwest breeze that is being drawn in and this pattern

will be locked in for the coming week. it is not a stormy pattern, it is just scattered clouds with a flurry here or there. northwest winds from 10-15 m.p.h.. it will be windy and maybe some flurries on wednesday. some of the guests will be higher than that but it will feel like the teams -- teens. there are buys a risk to the west of us. there are gale warnings out on the bed with a throughput chop. winds are gusting up to close to 30 knots. most of this will sneak over us, but it is basically a dr forecast. with those northwest winds, it is a cold forecast. notice the highs in the '30's.

they strike first blood in this one. it was a 37 yard touchdown. the tigers would answer. that cut the score to 16-tim. it was an incredible fish. northwestern found sidney stuart and they needed a two- point conversion to tie. it was 35-all. auburn was called for roughing the kicker. i guess they do not have a lot of confidence in him. they go for the win, but they do not get it.

it has become a winter tradition to set up an ice rink and play the winter classic. last year were was wrigley field and this year, it was fenway park and that was turned into a hockey rink. you have to load the spirit. what what hockey be without the dropping of the gloves? there was not a lot of scoring in this one. the bruins win in overtime. the reagans practiced today and then left for oakland. there is some good news on the injury front. both guys will start. you can expect rice to get plenty of carries in this game. he will be going against a terrific defense.
